David Massey

Mr. David Massey was born in North Portland to his parents Jean and Joe Massey, who always emphasized the importance of education.  David’s pathway to his position as Program Director for The I Am Academy began at Woodlawn Park Elementary School in NE Portland where he’d walk to school from his grandparents house. To say he’s from the soil would be an understatement. His family moved to Vancouver, where David would attend Sacajawea Grade School and Gaiser Junior High School.  For high school, David  attended Jesuit High School, where he was encouraged and empowered by teachers and coaches to continue to be the young man his parents had always encouraged him to be. Jesuit provided a culture of accountability that other schools did not.  After high school, David attended the University of Oregon on a football scholarship, which strengthened his desire to pass along the knowledge that he gained from his High School experience. Here, the reality set in that the biggest advantage he gained in high school was the ability to hold himself accountable, always believing in his abilities to succeed. More importantly, he learned to work hard and do his best at everything he did. This concept is also known as Age Quod Agis.  Following his graduation from university, David worked in corporate America for 27 years. Ultimately, he decided to transition from sales into teaching in hopes that he could pass along everything he’s learned over the years to the next generation, helping them to achieve their dreams. This history is what formed David’s mission for every student he teaches. Mr. Massey is committed to ensuring every student receives the same level of accountability. He combines this with encouragement and empowerment so students can show up as they are and focus on their futures, knowing their success will ensure the success of future generations.
